Why emoji meanings drift
Unicode gives every emoji an official name, but people decide what it means. The skull became “I’m dying of laughter”; the slightly smiling face 🙂 often reads as passive-aggressive; sparkles ✨ get wrapped around words for emphasis or sarcasm.
Meaning also depends on the artwork. Apple, Google, Samsung and Microsoft each draw their own versions, and a face that looks cheerful on one phone can look smug on another. Unicode’s full emoji list shows the vendor designs side by side.
